The Examiner, along with The Guardian and The Patriot, was the main provincial paper for much of the mid/late 1800s. It was a weekly from its beginnings in 1847 until 1876 and was a daily from 1877 until its demise in 1922. The Examiner’s coverage will fill in an important gap in our existing coverage and includes reporting on important issues in the Island’s history - Responsible Government, the Land Question, and Confederation. This project would focus on digitizing The Examiner from 1847-1900 which would comprise 55 microfilm reels and would result in over 52,250 searchable digital page images.
Project Cost: $20,000
This effort includes: funds needed to purchase new “master” microfilm reels, providing the best possible quality image source; staff resources (including UPEI students) to scan, perform quality assurance, and test digital outputs; staff effort to add new functionality to the system in response to request from the community; and costs of temporary and long-term storage to preserve and steward the digital pages for the long-term.
